Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a white crystall.
Solubility
BHT is insoluble in water but more soluble in methanol, ethyl alcohol, in benzene, toluene, oils and greases.
Uses
Butylated hydroxytoluene is mainly used as a food additive that exploits its antioxidant properties, known as BHT Food Grade and BHT Feed Grade. BHT is widely used as an antioxidant for industrial use, called BHT Technical Grade, for plastics, elastomers and waxes, oil for electric transformers, hydraulic fluids; it is also used as a fuel additive with the name AO-29. Butylated hydroxytoluene is also used to prevent the formation of peroxide in diethyl ether and other laboratory chemicals. Some additives contain BHT as their main ingredient, while others contain the chemical merely as part of their formulation.
