Germanium Metal
Description
Germanium is a metalloid chemically similar to tin. Like tin, it forms a large number of organometallics compounds. Germanium is found in few rare minerals and most of it is extracted from other elements, in particular from coal and zinc.
Appearance
Germanium is shiny, hard-brittle and silvery white in color.
Solubility
Germanium is not soluble in water.
Uses
Elemental germanium is used as a semiconductor in transistors, its different compounds are used in optical instrumentation, fiber optics, in polymerization catalysts and in high efficiency solar panels (in Aerospace sector). Germanium is also used in gold and dental alloys.
Classification
In the environment it is not considered toxic because it is present in low concentrations. But some Germanium compounds have proven to be toxic.
Safety
Request safety data sheet (SDS) and refer to points 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 13.
